The information in this section is not very detailed or searching, because of a desire to respect Douglas Adams’ personal privacy. Also, you might as well get one or more of the Biographies about him anyway.
=== Full Name, Birth And Family ===
Douglas Noel Adams (DNA) was born on 11th March 1952. After nearly a decade of saying in his blurbs that he was nearly married to a lady barrister, on November 25th 1991 Douglas Adams and Jane Belson tied the knot in a quiet ceremony at Finsbury Town Hall in London. They lived in Islington, until moving to Santa Barbara for Douglas to be closer to where the movie was supposedly going to happen.
Their first and only child was born on 22nd June 1994. Her name is Polly Jane Adams, but while she was in the womb she acquired the nickname ‘Rocket’. Douglas described her as “long and slim and dark and incomprehensibly beautiful”. Videos of her playing guitar can be found on his Mac Homepage.
Douglas Adams died on 11th May 2001, from a heart attack, after exercising in the gym in Santa Barbara. There is curious irony here - just as he died, he knew exactly where his towel was. A memorial service was held and 25th May has been declared Towel Day in his memory.
Every year, on or close to 11th March, a lecture is held by the Douglas Adams Funding Trust (DAFT). Further information related to this can generally be found closer to the time on the official Douglas Adams website or Save the Rhino. Money raised from these events go to charity - Save the Rhino and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Trust.
=== “Bop Ad” ===
Douglas Adams is sometimes referred to as “Bop Ad” because of the way he signs his name, at book signings and so on. As you will see (if you have images turned on), it’s quite distinctive:
And if you’ve not had any of your Douglas Adams books signed by the author, why not print out the above image and stick it onto the front inside page so that you can pretend that you have?
=== Douglas Adams And afda ===
Once upon a time, Douglas Adams read our humble froup. He eventually stopped and created forums on his own website - you can find out why at his TDV page. M.J. Simpson has compiled an archive of all Douglas’ contributions to the froup, which can be read here.
