Oh, right; the silly answer. Hold on, I've got bar va zl bgure cnagf urer; nu! Gurer vg vf! Evtug va sebag bs zr gur ragver gvzr!

ROT13 is the half-life of text on the internet. Often you'll see a reference tag on a newsserver post, try to connect, only to get the error "Message not found on server." Thus you can be assured that Reduction of Text, or ROT13 for short, has set in.

The "13" comes from the average number of days and/or weeks it takes before the effects can be seen for the average poster. This was calculated using the highest quality bit detectors, calendar programs, and staticians available -- in other words, the study took years where the layman could probably have whipped up something similar during his/her lunch hour just by taking the odd guess or two.

With the pace of technology going so terribly fast these days, it is now possible to artificially "age" electronic text to see what it will look like later down the road. In some cases, it will still be readable, in a sense, if you put it through a "decoder," which can be found in various places such as http://tools.geht.net/rot13.html

Fight entropy! Join the rot-13 clan, and help hold back the decay of electronic text!
